Michael van Gerwen and Christian Kist have qualified Friday for the second round of the World Championship darts at London's Alexandra Palace.
Van Gerwen came with a fright against René Eidams. Brabant's number one in the world needed a renewal in the fifth set to defeat German qualifier: 3-2.
The 26-year-old Van Gerwen seemed to be heading in his opening match at a smooth victory, but after two sovereign won sets (3-0 and 3-0), the engine suddenly began to falter.
Eidams came back into the match by winning the third and fourth set (1-3 and 0-3), allowing Van Gerwen suddenly wavered. The 2014 world champion managed in the nerve-racking fifth set, however, to prevent a huge sensation by winning in overtime 4-2.
Van Gerwen takes it in the second round against Darren Webster. The Englishman had earlier in the day with 3-1 too strong for the Scot John Henderson.

Kist engaged in the first round of the Englishman Justin Pipe from 3-0 in sets. Pipe, the number twenty of the world, no moment came in his game and there was Kist gratefully.
In the second round, plays the 29-year-old Kist against the winner of the match between the Englishman Dave Chisnall and Austrian Rowby-John Rodriguez.
For Kist is the first time that he knows how to get through to the second round of the World Cup. Last year he lost in the first round 3-1 to his compatriot Jelle Klaasen.
